As we drive around in our daily lives we tend to think that we’re invincible, but none of us is an Avenger. Even if you’re the safest driver on the road, you should always be prepared for an emergency. A vehicle emergency kit could save your life if you get stranded on the road, especially if you’re stranded for days. Star Motors European Service recommends you keep the following in your car, truck, or SUV in the event you end up stuck in a roadside emergency without help.
Non-Perishable Foodstuffs and Water
Should you get stranded for a day or more, you’ll need water to survive. You’ll also need food. Pack a case of bottled water and non-perishable food, such as protein bars, in your vehicle so you can survive. You don’t need to pack a ton of foodstuffs, but pack enough to keep you sustained for 24 hours. Stash a roll of paper towels, too. They have many uses, including being used as napkins.
Blankets and First Aid Supplies
It’s also a good idea to pack enough blankets to keep you and your passengers warm – you might only need one – a first aid kit, a utility knife, a flashlight, and batteries (don’t rely on your smartphone’s flashlight as it uses up its battery), and a pen and paper. Should you head north and get stranded in the mountains or in the snow, you’ll need the blankets to keep warm.
Automotive Emergency Supplies
Your vehicle also needs emergency supplies, especially since some of these supplies could get you back on the road and on your way. It’s wise to keep in your automobile at all times
- Automotive fluids: one quart of motor oil, one gallon of coolant, windshield washer fluid
- Emergency reflectors or flares (use LED flares if you don’t want to use standard flares)
- Ice scraper (if you’re headed to the snow)
- Jumper cables
- Tire inflator to seal a flat
- Tire pressure gauge
You’ll find you might need some of these supplies, such as the jumper cables, even if you don’t get stuck in a roadside emergency, and it’s a good idea to pack a smartphone car charger, too.
